The Maze: TikTok has released a separate shopping app for iPhone and Android in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. TikTok Shop, the marketplace inside TikTok’s video app, now has its own icon on the phone. For merchants in those markets, the question is whether that extra way in brings orders they would otherwise miss.

The Details:

  • Shoppers already had a place to buy inside TikTok. TikTok’s original video app let people discover products in clips or live broadcasts. Shoppers in Singapore could also skip straight to a Shop tab, which already had product categories, recommendations, promotions and a cart. That matters for sellers: TikTok quoted Singapore bag brand Good Totes in 2024 describing the tab as a place shoppers could find its products between live broadcasts. The new app moves that choice one step earlier. Shoppers can open a shopping app directly from their phone instead of opening TikTok first and then tapping Shop.

  • The separate app keeps TikTok’s selling formats. The App Store and Google Play listings describe an app where shoppers can browse recommendations, watch short clips or live product demonstrations, pay and track an order. A shopper who wants to see how a product works can still watch it being demonstrated before buying. A shopper who already knows what they want can open the shopping app and browse products. The listings describe the buyer experience. They do not establish whether each seller’s product range appears in both places or whether sellers can see which app produced an order.

  • Promotions give buyers a reason to try the download. The listings advertise offers exclusive to the new app, including shipping promotions and benefits on a first order. Those offers may prompt a customer to place their first order in the new app even if they’ve bought from TikTok before. That distinction matters: a first order in the app can come from a customer the marketplace already had. TikTok did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment on the rollout, and a release beyond the four markets has not been confirmed.

MarketMaze Take: A home screen icon puts TikTok in the running earlier, when someone picks an app because they want to shop. Sellers already on TikTok Shop should look at their total orders and what they keep after discounts across both ways of buying, if the reporting allows it. If standalone app orders rise while orders through the video app fall, the separate download may simply have moved some sales. Even a rise in total orders would need context: a promotion can pull forward a purchase someone would have made later.

The more useful signal comes after the first order deals. Do shoppers come back and buy again at prices that work for the seller? Until there’s evidence of that, merchants have a reason to watch the new app, with little basis to shift their budgets around it.
