The Maze: Agentic commerce is no longer a clean split between AI discovery and payment execution. MarketMaze's primary-source review finds that commerce and payment platforms are moving upstream, while AI surfaces and card networks are moving deeper into checkout and trust. The front door still matters. But the harder advantage is connecting discovery, identity, payment, orders, merchant data and loyalty without forcing merchants to rebuild the stack seven times.

  • Discovery is becoming the table stake, not the moat. Shopify, Mirakl, Stripe, PayPal, Adyen, Google and OpenAI now offer direct product discovery and agent connectivity. Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite syndicates catalogues to agents; Adyen's Agentic Feed does the same for enterprise merchants. Adyen also closed its Talon. One loyalty acquisition on 1 July 2026, although integration has only begun. The old model—AI finds the product, a PSP only moves the money—is already outdated.

  • PayPal has the broadest direct product coverage. Under MarketMaze's definitions, PayPal is the only player with a direct offer across all seven stages. Store Sync connects catalogues and order systems to AI surfaces. Agent-ready payments add identity, fraud, buyer protection and disputes. Its consumer wallet, merchant network, purchase data, rewards and offers close the loop. The Hey Savi launch shows that discovery-to-checkout flow operating in the UK, not only in a protocol document. Breadth does not guarantee the best product in every cell. It does reduce the number of handoffs.

  • Commerce platforms own the operational memory. Shopify directly covers discovery, agent connection, checkout, orders and merchant data. Mirakl directly covers catalogue, agent connection, orders and marketplace data, while enabling payment and trust through partners. Orders from Shopify agentic storefronts land in the merchant admin, preserving the customer and post-purchase relationship. That data continuity is difficult for a consumer interface to reproduce.

  • AI surfaces and networks remain specialists. Google and OpenAI directly control discovery and agent connection, but much of payment, fulfilment and merchant data runs through connected backends. Google's UCP standardises the full journey; it does not replace the merchant's OMS or payment provider. Visa and Mastercard invert that pattern. Their direct strengths are consent, credentials, agent authentication and payment execution. Discovery and order management stay limited or partner-enabled.

Why it matters: Merchants should evaluate agentic-commerce partners by the gaps between cells, not the number of logos in a pitch deck. A direct capability can simplify integration; an enabled capability can preserve flexibility. The strongest stack is not necessarily the one provider that claims everything. It is the combination that keeps catalogue, orders, customer data and loyalty portable while making identity, risk and payment execution boringly reliable.
