The Maze: Yelp has plugged Reservations and Waitlist into ChatGPT, letting diners move from “where should we eat?” to a confirmed table or queue position inside one conversation. The feature spans thousands of restaurants in the U.S. and Canada. It extends July’s Yelp content deal with OpenAI—reviews, ratings, photos and business details—into an action layer. ChatGPT now controls more of the storefront; Yelp supplies the local data and booking rails beneath it.
Discovery now ends closer to a transaction. ChatGPT can surface restaurants, show available times and open a reservation flow from a result or restaurant page. The user can specify location, date, time, party size, cuisine, budget or atmosphere, then refine the request conversationally. Yelp’s launch lets eligible diners book or join a waitlist without leaving the chat. The leap is small on-screen and large strategically: an AI answer is becoming a commerce session.
The booking is embedded, but the operating system remains outside ChatGPT. OpenAI supports reservation inventory from OpenTable, Resy and Yelp. Yelp coverage is limited to the U.S. and Canada; OpenTable is global and Resy is U.S.-only. ChatGPT may prefill the date, time and party size, then asks permission before sharing a diner’s name and email with a provider. Once confirmed, the reservation belongs to the provider. ChatGPT does not retain it for management, and changes or cancellations go through Yelp, OpenTable or Resy.
Yelp is choosing infrastructure over destination purity. Its earlier OpenAI integration supplied trusted local content. The new release adds task completion through Yelp Reservations and Waitlist at thousands of restaurants. That may reduce the need to visit Yelp at the discovery stage, but Yelp still powers the listing, availability, booking and post-booking service. Better to own the rail under someone else’s storefront than defend an app visit the consumer no longer needs.
Restaurants gain another high-intent door into the same dining room. Yelp Guest Manager already combines reservations, remote waitlists, table management and guest communication. The ChatGPT integration feeds demand into that existing front-of-house layer rather than creating a separate inventory system. For operators, the value is not “AI traffic.” It is incremental covers at acceptable cancellation rates, with enough source data to decide whether the channel adds demand or merely reroutes diners who would have booked anyway.
The control trade-off is becoming visible. OpenAI owns the conversational interface and can influence which restaurants appear, which provider is matched and how the request is framed. Yelp owns a slice of the local-business data and task completion. Restaurants own the actual experience but may see less of the discovery journey. Availability also varies by restaurant and provider; reservation search is limited to consumer ChatGPT plans on supported models and is not available in voice chats.
Why it matters: Local search used to monetize the handoff: recommend a place, then send the user somewhere else to act. ChatGPT is compressing recommendation, availability and booking into one interface. Yelp’s response is pragmatic. It is accepting a weaker claim on the front door to keep control of useful infrastructure behind it. Restaurant groups should measure incremental covers, attribution, customer-data access and cancellation behavior by source. “Booked by AI” sounds futuristic. The unit economics remain stubbornly analog.
