Reviews describe what previous buyers experienced. A shopper about to buy may need a different answer: whether the cable fits this socket, the shelf takes this load, or the part matches this model.

Use public Q&A to close those gaps. Prioritize decisions that can prevent a mismatch, then measure whether customers end up with suitable products.

🔎 What research says

Prioritize factual fit questions and measure the problems they resolve. Q&A arrival was linked with better subsequent ratings for mismatch-prone products, while a separate laptop study found that answer volume alone did not clearly predict sales. Neither result justifies manufacturing cheerful answers.

🗺️ In this guide

1. Answer fit questions before adding generic reassurance

Same charger and two connector shapes. Left a vague blank speech bubble obscures the mismatch. Right the compatible connector fits while incompatible connector remains visibly apart.

📈 Recommendation

Start with repeated compatibility, dimensions and use-condition questions on products receiving fit complaints. Answer with the relevant model, measurement and limit.

  • For a charger, specify supported devices and required wattage. Keep unresolved compatibility explicit instead of answering “works great.”

  • Track fit-related returns and complaints alongside paid orders. Move recurring answers into product specifications once checked.

🎓 Findings

Banerjee, Dellarocas and Zervas (2021) analyzed reviews around the first public Q&A answer at a large retailer. Their preferred observational model used 184,811 review records; lower-rated meant at most four stars before Q&A. It estimated about 0.11 stars of net improvement for lower-rated products after Q&A arrived. This is roughly a tenth of a point on the five-star rating scale, not an 11% sales increase.

The model’s low-rating interaction was 0.122 stars, with a 0.041-star standard error, the model’s estimate of sampling uncertainty; its common post-answer term was −0.011. It found no clear corresponding decline for already higher-rated products. Simple before/after estimates were larger because ratings can move back toward their usual level even without Q&A.

🧠 Why it works

A precise answer can help an unsuitable buyer leave before purchase and a suitable buyer proceed. Better matching is the paper’s explanation; the evidence does not show that all higher ratings represent more paid sales.

✋ Limitations

The first answer was not randomly assigned. Low ratings are an imperfect fit-mismatch signal. The proposed charger answer and returns dashboard are applications, not the study treatment.

2. Measure resolved questions rather than answer volume

Same question card and product. Left many blank small reply bubbles surround the unresolved connector. Right one clear visual match links the correct connector to the product.

📈 Recommendation

Audit whether answers are accurate and sufficient to decide. A fast reply is useful only if it removes uncertainty without hiding a relevant limitation.

  • Sample answered and unanswered questions by issue. Check whether a shopper can identify the correct model after reading.

  • Keep response time as a service metric, then assess fit returns, complaints and paid orders separately. Do not coach staff to make answers artificially positive.

🎓 Findings

Feng, Feng and Li (2023) followed 120 Amazon laptops for three months. Their observational model found a positive relationship between answer sentiment and a rank-derived sales measure. Question volume, answer volume and response rate did not show statistically clear direct sales relationships.

These are model associations, not an experiment showing that warmer words increase purchases. No verified conversion lift follows from the answer-count result.

🧠 Why it works

An answer count treats a complete compatibility explanation and a useless reply equally. Assessing the information supplied keeps the service tied to the buying decision.

✋ Limitations

A short panel of laptops may not describe other categories or longer-term effects. Statistical nonsignificance does not establish that answering questions has no value. Exact store measures proposed here were not tested.

💡 The takeaway

Answer the fit question that would otherwise become a return.

Start with recurring compatibility gaps and verify the answers. Use fit complaints, returns and paid orders to decide whether Q&A deserves more operating time.
