The Maze: Walmart has launched a $120-a-year US bundle combining its Walmart+ shopping and delivery membership with Sam’s Club Plus, the premium membership at its warehouse-club division. The offer makes using both retailers cheaper. Whether it makes customers buy more is a separate question.

The Details:

  • The extra cost depends on the membership a shopper already has. New members can buy the pair for $120 annually, plus applicable taxes. Existing Walmart+ annual members can switch for $22 more a year. Basic Sam’s Club members can upgrade for $60 more annually, while Plus members can activate Walmart+ without an additional membership charge. These are different starting points, not identical discounts. Walmart’s conversion terms also distinguish the annual price from the bill due today. In the specified annual Walmart+ conversion route, the immediate charge is the price difference adjusted for the time remaining; the full bundle fee applies at renewal.

  • One subscription price still requires two linked accounts. Customers join, upgrade or link through the retailers’ apps or website. The Walmart-billed plan renews annually, and shoppers need a Sam’s Club account to activate that side’s benefits. The bundle connects access to the two retailers; it does not create one combined shopping checkout. Delivery remains conditional: scheduled Walmart orders need at least $35, and Sam’s orders $50, subject to availability and restrictions. The entertainment perk is a choice of one advertising-supported service, Peacock Premium or Paramount+ Essential, with separate registration. Shoppers can change that choice every 90 days. A longer benefit list does not remove each benefit’s rules.

  • Existing dual subscribers expose the commercial trade-off. Most customers already paying for both can link accounts and receive a prorated Walmart+ refund. For eligible dual members covered by the terms, separate Walmart+ renewal billing ends and membership payments continue through Sam’s Club. That gives customers a saving before they place another order. Walmart enters the experiment with a growing membership business: in the quarter ended July 31, its global membership fee revenue rose 17% year over year. Sam’s Club US membership fee revenue rose 6%, and its ecommerce sales grew 26%. Those pre-launch results provide context, not evidence that this bundle is working.

MarketMaze Take: Walmart is lowering the price of shopping across its two retail formats. The attractive part for customers is immediate; the return for Walmart depends on what happens afterward. A refunded membership fee is easy to count. An extra shopping habit takes longer to establish.

  • Cross-shopping must earn its discount. The bundle may encourage a warehouse shopper to order weekly essentials from Walmart, or a Walmart customer to try Sam’s Club. But customers who already use both can simply pay less. For retailers elsewhere, this is the useful mechanism to examine: compare additional shopping with the subscription income surrendered, rather than treating enrollment as proof of new demand.

  • The forecast is narrower than the sales pitch. Walmart says the change’s costs should not materially affect its existing quarterly or full-year guidance. That leaves room for a manageable investment. It does not establish higher spending, better retention or customers abandoning a rival membership. The launch changes the offer; the commercial outcome remains unmeasured.
