The Maze: A brand can now buy Spotify ads aimed at Walmart shoppers, then connect those ad views or listens with purchases at Walmart. Walmart Connect, the retailer’s advertising business, is extending that approach to selected live television channels too. Its October 6 announcement also advances a separate Yahoo integration into early testing. The Spotify option is for US advertisers. For brands elsewhere, the useful question is which retailer’s purchase data can improve their media buying—and what the resulting sales report actually proves.

  • Spotify becomes another place to reach purchase-based audiences. US advertisers use Walmart DSP, the retailer’s automated ad-buying platform, to buy Spotify audio, video and display ads. An audience is a group of shoppers selected using Walmart’s purchase signals. The advertiser can reach that group outside Walmart’s own website or stores. Walmart’s new capability also connects exposure to sales at the retailer. That is different from proving a listener bought something because of the ad. The announcement gives no audience-match rates or public integration pricing.

  • The television change covers selected channels. Buyers can arrange private marketplace deals: negotiated access to particular advertising space through Walmart DSP. Warner Bros. Discovery combines streaming inventory with live, scheduled television from TBS, TLC, truTV, HLN and Food Network. FreeWheel supplies the technology enabling these automated deals. Walmart audiences can guide which viewers receive the ads. The “first” here is Walmart audience use on live linear television; it does not mean Walmart invented automated TV buying. More inventory is planned, without a promised timetable.

  • Yahoo lets the data work inside another buying platform. Its integration began with a closed VIZIO trial in May. It now moves into alpha, an early testing stage, and expands to additional connected-TV publishers. Connected TV means television watched through an internet connection. Magnite provides technology on the side selling the advertising space. The earlier model specified Walmart-controlled data enablement. Buyers should therefore distinguish permission to use Walmart audience groups from receiving unrestricted customer records. Alpha also does not mean every advertiser can start immediately.

  • The test results need their original denominators. Walmart’s Hidden Valley Ranch case presents 55% additional reach beyond linear TV and a 27% lower cost per thousand ad impressions. The cost comparison is with earlier 2026 connected-TV campaigns of similar length. Its 26% increase in cart additions compares June 3–29, 2025 with the same dates in 2026. These are three different comparisons. Cart additions are not completed purchases, and the public release supplies no experiment showing how many extra sales the ads caused. A selected advertiser testimonial cannot settle that question.

  • This extends an existing model with a meaningful alternative. Walmart launched its offsite DSP in 2021, already linking ads with online and store transactions. Amazon added Spotify buying using its own shopping signals in October 2025, initially across nine markets including the US, UK and Germany. That makes Walmart’s change relevant beyond America without implying a worldwide Walmart rollout. Walmart’s global advertising business generated $6.4 billion in fiscal 2026, the year ended January 31. That annual total is not revenue from these new integrations. Their individual fees, revenue and margins remain undisclosed.

Why it matters: A retailer’s value to advertisers increasingly travels beyond its own screens. For a brand, the practical gain is another way to reach shoppers and judge external media against retail purchases. The buying route still matters: Spotify and selected TV deals use Walmart DSP; Yahoo remains in alpha. Before moving budget, separate audience access, matched sales and genuinely additional sales. Only the last answers whether the advertising paid for growth rather than taking credit for customers who would have bought anyway.
