LET’S ENTER THE MAZE!

1️⃣ News

The Maze: TikTok is reportedly testing a US Shop Plus membership at $6, $10 or $15 monthly, bundling discounts, coupons and free shipping to keep checkout in-app.

  • One test screen cut a $57 hair product by $10 and added free three-day delivery; TikTok has not confirmed a broad launch.

  • TikTok already gives Fulfilled by TikTok products no-threshold free shipping, while fulfillment fees still depend on weight, units and storage.

  • Its three-day badge requires at least 90% route-level delivery performance, so a subscription promise would depend on warehouse, seller and carrier execution.

Why it matters: Plus could convert discovery into repeat demand, but sellers may fund part of the loyalty promise through tighter delivery, inventory and discount economics.

2️⃣ News

The Maze: Google advertising revenue reached $81.6 billion in Q2. Gemini is expanding the queries and product matches that Google can monetize.

*Source: Google Ads. Gemini selects products and generates a tailored explanation for the shopping query.*

  • Search revenue rose 17% to $63.3 billion; YouTube ads grew 13% to $11.1 billion.

  • AI Max can rewrite product titles, choose ad formats and send shoppers to a more relevant commercial page.

  • World Cup videos drew 1.7 billion global viewers, while YouTube added two-click TV purchasing and AI-matched sponsorships.

Why it matters: Retailers gain access to conversational demand. Google gains more control over the match, creative, destination and measurement.

3️⃣ News

The Maze: Meta launched Seller today for U.S. iPhone users, giving frequent Marketplace sellers one workspace for listings, buyer messages and performance.

*Source: Meta. Seller separates buyer conversations by listing and gives sellers a dedicated view of listing activity and performance.*

  • Existing listings, messages, ratings and selling history carry over, while anything created in Seller still appears where buyers browse on Marketplace.

  • Meta AI proposes titles, descriptions, prices and categories from photos; bulk tools, an item-based inbox and inventory controls speed up repetitive seller work.

  • Meta says Marketplace receives 430 million item listings globally each month, so a better seller console can improve supply without moving demand.

Why it matters: Sellers get efficiency, but Meta still controls discovery and the performance signals. The app professionalises supply while keeping Marketplace as the gate.

4️⃣ Insight

The Maze: SHEIN reached $41.8 billion in 2025 revenue, but reported growth fell from 41.1% in 2023 to just 1.1% in Q1 2026.

  • Annual revenue rose from $32.1 billion to $41.8 billion between 2023 and 2025.

  • Q1 2026 revenue was $9.052 billion—only $100 million above Q1 2025—while orders fulfilled grew 4.6%.

  • Operating income fell from $348 million to $258 million and margin contracted from 3.9% to 2.9% in the latest quarter.

Why it matters: SHEIN has proved it can reach global scale. Its IPO must now prove that a $40-billion retailer can restart growth without sacrificing profit.

5️⃣ Insight

The Maze: ChatGPT reaches 494M web users, but 461M also use Google. That makes OpenAI's ad pitch about a better moment of intent—not a new audience.

  • The same 461M shared users equal 95% of ChatGPT's audience but only 14% of Google's 3.3B-user reach.

  • Similarweb's method measures cross-browsing, not duplicated queries, time, intent or app usage.

  • ChatGPT can still differentiate deeper in the journey, where leading ads now appear around turns 14–22, but it must prove conversion lift.

Why it matters: Google owns the reach moat. OpenAI's opening is richer intent, but advertisers should test incremental outcomes—not pay twice for the same audience.

6️⃣ Insight

The Maze: Across 40 European marketplace exits, estimated returns jump from 113x and 78x at the top to 30x by fourth place. Entry timing did the heavy lifting.

  • Deliveroo reached an estimated 113x, Vinted 78x and Wolt 69x before the ranking dropped to AUTO1 at 30x.

  • Exit size was not destiny: uSwitch's $300m outcome still mapped to 28x, while Allegro's $11.6bn listing mapped to 3.6x.

  • Vinted's secondary and Etsy's Depop deal show why valuation multiples are not identical to realized fund returns.

Why it matters: The biggest marketplace returns came before category consensus. AI-native platforms may offer the next opening, but only if they build real liquidity.
