The Maze: SpaceX just made AI compute look less like a cost center and more like a product line. Its IPO filing disclosed that Anthropic is paying $1.25 billion a month for access to compute capacity through May 2029. That is not a cloud footnote. It is the shape of the AI economy in one contract.

  • The deal turns spare capacity into a giant revenue stream. Business Insider reports that Anthropic will pay SpaceX $1.25 billion per month, with the agreement running through May 2029 if neither side exits.

  • Anthropic is buying relief from demand pressure. The earlier partnership gave Anthropic access to more than 300 megawatts of capacity and over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs, according to Axios.

  • The contract also exposes the new AI infrastructure tradeoff. Every GPU sold to a customer is also a GPU not used for internal model training, product features, or future AI services.

  • This changes how public markets may value AI infrastructure. AI compute can look like recurring capacity revenue if big model labs are willing to sign multi-year agreements.

  • The strategic risk is dependency on the same bottleneck everyone else has. Nvidia pricing, power availability, data-center execution, and customer concentration all matter.

Why it matters: AI winners are usually discussed as model companies. This deal says infrastructure owners may collect rent from the model race, too.
