The Maze: Shopify, the platform merchants use to run stores and sell products, released The Entrepreneur Effect on October 13. The new global report combines estimates of its merchants' wider economic impact with data on visits from AI shopping tools. The eye-catching finding is that AI-referred visits converted into orders more often than unpaid search visits. That describes the visitors Shopify observed. It does not prove that using AI makes a shopper more likely to buy, or show how much traffic an individual merchant can expect.

  • AI visitors bought more often in one measured quarter. From April to June 2026, sessions attributed to an AI-powered feature or channel had a conversion rate 80% above sessions from organic search, meaning unpaid search-engine results. Conversion rate is the share of browsing sessions that become purchases. The comparison is a relative increase, not an 80% purchase rate or an increase of 80 percentage points. AI-referred orders also had an average value 14% higher. That second figure describes completed orders, not every AI visit. Neither measure reveals the total sales volume arriving through AI.

  • The report measures referral performance, not the cause of it. A shopper may describe a need in an AI chat, receive a recommendation and then visit a store. Shopify classifies the visit by the AI feature or channel credited with sending it. Its methods give the quarter and that attribution rule. They do not disclose the AI sample size, underlying conversion rates or a controlled experiment isolating the effect of AI. Shopify's explanation that these shoppers arrive better informed is plausible. It remains an interpretation: shoppers who already intend to buy may choose AI tools more often.

  • The trillion-dollar headline covers a much wider economy than store checkouts. Shopify estimates more than $1.2 trillion in global economic activity and roughly 9.6 million jobs supported in the year ending June 30, 2026. The calculation includes merchant and partner activity, suppliers, and spending that follows from that activity. It uses an economic model fed by sales, partner revenue and global supply-chain data. This is neither Shopify's revenue nor the value of goods sold through its stores. Jobs supported are people associated with that activity, not 9.6 million newly created jobs. The report's $194.7 billion partner subtotal is already included in the global total.

  • Worldwide reach is real, but each merchant still has to measure its own channel. Shopify separately records $68.1 billion in cross-border sales during the same annual period: orders shipped outside a merchant's home country. This is an actual sales measure with a different definition from modeled economic activity. The report hub says AI referral traffic varies by store, product category, market and measurement period. The global comparison therefore cannot promise the same result in every country or category. Publishing a report also does not make every AI shopping or checkout feature available to every merchant.

Why it matters: An acquisition channel can deliver a higher share of buyers and still contribute few orders if it sends few visitors. Merchants should compare their own AI referrals with search, social and email, then check order volume, repeat purchases, acquisition costs and profit. The report supplies a reason to measure AI discovery. It does not supply a reason to shift an entire marketing budget. For readers worldwide, the useful question is whether their own store sees profitable demand from those visits, rather than whether the platform's average sounds impressive.
