The Maze: German shoppers spent an estimated €566 million on Shein, Temu and AliExpress in Q3 2026, down 35.5% from a year earlier. Their combined share of German online-goods sales fell to 3.1%, from 5.3% in Q2. The consumer survey comes from bevh, Germany's ecommerce trade association. It links the weakness to higher import costs and softer spending confidence. But the survey does not isolate what tariffs caused. The sharper commercial point: three low-price platforms lost ground while the wider online market kept growing, without an automatic windfall for local shops.

Source: bevh. German online-goods sales by retailer type, Q3 2025 versus Q3 2026, in millions of euros including VAT; OMP means online marketplaces, MCV multichannel sellers, and Online-Handel online-only shops.

  • The sales drop and share drop use different clocks. The 35.5% decline compares July–September 2026 with the same months in 2025; the share change compares Q3 with Q2 this year. Germany's online-goods market grew 2.9% to €18.473 billion in Q3, including VAT and without adjusting for inflation. That is the relevant market context, rather than online services or worldwide platform revenue. The study surveys 40,000 German residents aged 14 and over across a full year; that is not a 40,000-person Q3 sample. These are spending estimates, not audited earnings from the three businesses.

  • A small import charge can be large beside a cheap product. Since 1 July, the EU's former duty exemption for low-value imports has been replaced by a temporary €3 customs charge on online consignments up to €150, calculated by product category. Five T-shirts in one customs category attract €3; a T-shirt and a watch attract €6. Sellers or importers normally declare and pay. They can absorb added cost in margin or pass it into prices; this survey does not show which choice each platform made. The rule applies across EU destinations, making the cost mechanism relevant beyond Germany without proving a wider sales decline.

  • A retreat by three platforms is not a retreat by marketplaces. German sales through all online marketplaces rose 5% year on year. Retailers combining physical shops and online channels grew their online sales 2.5%; online-only shops fell 0.8%. Those channel totals cannot identify where a former Temu customer spent next, but they do challenge a simple local-retail victory story. bevh's chief executive Alien Mulyk says domestic providers have not benefited from their Asian competitors' weakness. A smaller rival still leaves the harder job of earning the next order.

  • Shoppers kept buying necessities while delaying bigger purchases. Online medicines grew 15.4%, drugstore goods 14.3% and groceries 9.1%. Clothing rose 4.9% and shoes 6.4%, so the three-platform fall cannot be reduced to a collapse in all fashion spending. Electronics and telecommunications fell 4.6%; furniture, lamps and decoration fell 5.2%. These are German category-wide changes, not the named platforms' product results. They show a divided market in which assortment and purchase urgency matter alongside import costs. The study offers no separate sales estimate for each platform or direct measure of shopper switching.

Why it matters: For a seller competing on low prices, the risk is a weaker price advantage after import costs. For a local retailer, the opportunity still needs evidence: fewer rival sales do not guarantee more of your own. EU-bound operators outside Germany face the same customs mechanism, but should test local demand and category performance before copying the German conclusion. The next useful evidence is comparable spending data from other EU markets, plus proof of where lost platform orders went. Customs costs are measurable; customer transfer remains an open question.
