Retail media is not one ad slot. A retailer may sell sponsored placements on its site, ads off-site using its audience, screens in stores and campaign reports tied to its own sales data. Those surfaces reach shoppers close to purchase, but the retailer often defines the audience, attribution window and credited sales. IAB Europe’s 2026 standards update adds clearer measurement definitions and a formal incrementality section. That makes scope even more important: a closed-loop report links exposure to outcomes; it does not automatically prove the ad caused them. Start with who owns the inventory, then follow how the campaign is bought and measured.

🔀 Retail media vs commerce media

Retail media often centers on retailer-owned inventory and shopper data; commerce media is used more broadly across commerce environments. Industry usage varies. Shortcut: whose audience, inventory and transaction data are involved?

🔀 Closed-loop measurement vs incrementality

Closed-loop measurement connects exposure and sales records. Incrementality estimates what would not have happened without the ad. Shortcut: linked is not lifted.

🔀 Endemic vs non-endemic advertiser

Endemic brands sell through the retailer; non-endemic brands do not. Shortcut: ask whether the product is sold by that retailer.

🔀 DSP vs SSP vs programmatic

DSP helps buyers purchase media; SSP helps inventory owners offer it; programmatic describes automated buying and selling. Shortcut: buyer tool, seller tool, transaction method.
