The Maze: Reddit, the discussion website and app, says its search traffic declined by more than one million referrals on average per week in October. Chief executive Steve Huffman blames part of the pressure on Google's AI search experiences. Reddit's response is to give people more reasons to return directly.

The Details:

  • A search answer can replace a visit. Normally, someone finds a Reddit discussion through Google and clicks a link to read it. That incoming visit is a referral. Google's AI Overviews put generated summaries into search results; AI Mode offers generated answers and follow-up questions alongside links. Huffman says these experiences push other results further down the page and send little traffic. His explanation is plausible, but it is management's assessment. Reddit's reported loss is a weekly average, not a daily figure or a count of unique people. The report supplies neither the comparison baseline nor the total search-referral count needed to calculate a percentage decline.

  • There may be more than one problem. Huffman also says Reddit believes its machine-translated content is appearing lower in search results. He says that would mainly affect Reddit outside the United States. That is a different issue from users reading an AI answer instead of clicking. The available evidence does not divide the lost referrals between those explanations. Huffman says people still search for Reddit and Google still fetches its pages heavily. Automated fetching, known as crawling, supplies a search system with content. It does not put a person on Reddit or create an advertising opportunity by itself.

  • Reddit is trying to build a return habit. On October 28 it announced two feeds: For You mixes communities people have joined with recommendations based on their interests; Following shows posts from joined communities. Reddit says the change will roll out globally over the coming weeks. A useful recommendation could give someone a reason to reopen the app without starting at Google. That outcome remains unproven. The preceding quarter was strong: Reddit reported US$895 million in revenue, up 53% from a year earlier, including US$847 million from advertising. Those results end in September and cannot settle October's traffic question.

MarketMaze Take: Reddit's problem is a weakening route to its audience, not demonstrated disappearance of demand. A search engine can keep using a site's content while sending fewer people to it. For retailers and publishers elsewhere, that distinction matters: being present in a search experience and winning a customer visit are different commercial outcomes.

  • Direct use changes who controls the next visit. Reddit's recommendation feed tries to turn a one-off arrival into a repeat habit. If it works, the next visit depends less on Google's layout. The business value comes from people returning, not simply from adding another feed tab.

  • Keep the damage claim proportional. Growing advertising revenue in the preceding quarter is a substantial counterweight to a collapse narrative. But it does not disprove a later referral problem. Without the missing baseline and causal split, the useful conclusion is narrower: Reddit is reporting distribution pressure and seeking more control over repeat use.
