The Maze: OpenAI plans to test visual ads while people generate images in ChatGPT. The first trial is due later in October in the US, with an initial group of advertisers. Paid images will be labeled and kept separate from the picture being created. The company is also expanding measurement connections and preparing brand-suitability evaluations. For retailers, the opportunity is to show a product beside a moment of imagination. Whether that moment produces additional sales remains the question.
The new placement puts products beside image creation. Advertisers would use pictures to show an item in use, an experience or a source of inspiration. That fits a different task from typing a search query: a person may be exploring what a room, trip or idea could look like. For a brand, the creative challenge is to make the product useful to that exploration. OpenAI has announced an initial test, not a general release. It gives no exact launch day, inventory forecast or pricing for this format, so merchants cannot yet treat it as a dependable line in a media plan.
The ad stays outside the image the user asked for. The paid unit will be identifiable and separate from generated content; OpenAI also maintains that advertising does not affect ChatGPT's answers. That boundary matters commercially. A product shown next to an assistant's output and a product presented as the assistant's recommendation carry different expectations. Brands get a place to explain an offering without the announcement promising sponsored content inside the generated picture. The test will need to show whether users find the adjacent advertising helpful enough to engage with it.
Better tracking gives buyers a way to judge the opportunity. OpenAI is broadening connections to existing conversion and attribution systems, which link ad exposure to later customer actions. Its measurement tools can capture purchase signals and report conversions after an impression without a click. Geographic experiments are also being explored to estimate additional sales caused by advertising. That distinction is crucial: a sale credited to an ad may have happened anyway. The new format has no published test results, and earlier partner anecdotes about ChatGPT Ads do not establish its return.
Brand confidence is still a work in progress. OpenAI is developing evaluation pilots with advertising-verification specialists DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. They will assess safeguards in a controlled setting without seeing private conversations. Its placement policies aim to exclude sensitive or unsuitable chats, while qualifying advertisers can use Negative Phrases for narrower requirements. These are controls and planned checks, not a completed suitability certification. Merchants need clarity on which contexts can carry their ads, alongside clarity on who can actually join the test.
Why it matters: ChatGPT could add a paid product-discovery surface at the point where users are visualizing possibilities. That would create another budget claim for brands, but an attractive placement is only the beginning. Retailers should judge product-use creative, actual access and additional purchases together. OpenAI's measurement and suitability work addresses the questions media buyers will ask before scaling spend; it does not answer them in advance. The October US test is where the new format starts accumulating its own evidence.
