LET’S ENTER THE MAZE!

1️⃣ News

The Maze: Europe fined Google €890 million for controlling discovery in Search and outside purchasing from Play. The remedy reaches products, not just cash.

  • The Commission split the EU penalty: €460 million for favoring Google's own Search services and €430 million for restricting Play steering.

  • Developers must be free to show cheaper outside offers; Google's steering-fee level and duration exceeded what the DMA permits.

  • Google has 60 days to comply, putting ranking design, developer messages and purchase-channel fees under practical scrutiny.

Why it matters: The EU is opening the shelf and the toll gate. Rivals may gain traffic and app businesses more margin, while Google loses some journey control.

2️⃣ News

The Maze: OpenAI has published the mechanics of ChatGPT Ads: conversation-led delivery, CPM or CPC buying, a second-price auction and conversion tracking.

*Source: OpenAI Help Center. The example shows the advertiser, copy, landing page and image creative below a conversation.*

  • Ads appear below conversations, with context hints guiding relevance rather than acting like exact-match search keywords.

  • Brands can buy impressions or clicks through a relevance-weighted auction, while OpenAI retains control over delivery.

  • Pixel and server-side conversion tools connect clicks to purchases or leads, but merchants must reconcile attribution themselves.

Why it matters: ChatGPT is monetizing the space between product discovery and purchase. Brands gain intent-rich inventory; OpenAI owns the auction and its evidence.

3️⃣ News

The Maze: India will let foreign-funded ecommerce platforms own Indian-made inventory for export, moving Amazon beyond marketplace intermediation.

  • The export-only exception lets platforms buy from Indian manufacturers, hold stock and sell abroad; domestic inventory-led retail stays prohibited.

  • Ownership gives Amazon more control over procurement, export preparation, fulfilment and returns, while smaller manufacturers get a simpler route to foreign demand.

  • Amazon says Global Selling has enabled more than 200,000 Indian exporters and targets $80 billion in cumulative exports by 2030.

Why it matters: India is trading some platform control for export scale. The commercial test is whether easier global access improves seller economics without deepening dependency.

4️⃣ Insight

The Maze: Deloitte finds brands rating five ecommerce basics 13 to 19 points above consumers. Internal confidence is outrunning customer experience today.

  • Accurate search has the widest gap: 36% of brands call it excellent, versus 17% of consumers.

  • Inventory availability lands at 35% versus 19%, while delivery updates reach 33% versus 18%.

  • Even the best consumer result—clear pricing at 24%—trails brands' 37% self-rating by 13 points.

Why it matters: The basics are now table stakes. Brands that measure feature deployment instead of customer outcomes will fund the wrong fixes first.

5️⃣ Insight

The Maze: EU low-value ecommerce imports rose from 4.67B to 5.88B items in one year. Now each cheap parcel meets a EUR3 customs cost.

  • Belgium hit 1.37B imported items in 2025, Hungary nearly doubled to 974M, and the EU total rose about 26%.

  • The new guidance removes the EUR150 relief and applies a temporary EUR3 duty per item from 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2028.

  • Netherlands fell from 1.27B to 936M items, a useful warning as the Commission checks whether platforms reroute trade flows.

Why it matters: A tiny fee becomes real at billions of items. The edge moves to platforms that can manage inventory, declarations, and customer costs together.

6️⃣ Insight

The Maze: ECDB's 2026 forecast puts Central Europe at EUR 206.5B in ecommerce revenue, but Germany alone owns EUR 118.7B of the pool.

  • Germany holds 57.5% of the regional total, making it bigger than the other ten listed markets combined.

  • Poland is second at EUR 31.2B, while Switzerland and Austria push the top four markets to 87.5% of regional revenue.

  • Greece shows the twist: smaller markets can matter because limited Amazon presence leaves room for domestic and Chinese cross-border platforms.

Why it matters: Central Europe is not one balanced expansion plan. It is Germany, Poland, DACH leverage, and a long tail where platform structure changes.
