The Maze: Google’s advertising business did not merely survive the shift to generative AI. It grew through it. Alphabet booked $81.6 billion in advertising revenue in Q2 2026, up 14% year over year. Search and other revenue rose 17% to $63.3 billion, while YouTube ads gained 13% to $11.1 billion. Gemini is helping Google interpret longer, messier questions and turn them into relevant ads. For retailers, that creates new demand. It also gives Google more control over the match, the message and the route to purchase.

  • AI is expanding the auction, not removing it. Google says AI features are increasing Search usage, and AI Mode has passed 1 billion monthly active users. Gemini can understand queries that do not map neatly to a merchant’s keywords. That gives Google more opportunities to insert a commercial answer into research that might previously have produced no useful ad. The company says Gemini improved the delivery of highly relevant Shopping ads by 20%. That is a relevance metric—not a 20% lift in sales or conversions—but it shows where the engine is changing.

  • The merchant supplies inputs; Google assembles the route. AI Max for Shopping can rewrite product titles from Merchant Center feed and website data, choose between text and Shopping formats, and expand the final destination beyond the product URL to a relevant category or editorial page. Google says the beta typically adds 5% more conversions or conversion value at a similar cost, based on internal global data. Advertisers retain brand settings, URL exclusions and text rules. Google still decides when its predicted match is better.

  • YouTube adds an attention-and-commerce layer. More than 1.7 billion unique viewers globally watched World Cup-related videos on YouTube. Google used that attention to sell custom sponsorships that dynamically surface creator videos around a brand’s chosen moment. Brandcast also introduced a two-click Google Pay purchase flow for connected TVs and tools that amplify creator content already tagged with products. The quarter’s YouTube growth cannot be assigned to the tournament alone, but Google is clearly shortening the path from cultural moment to creator recommendation to checkout.

  • The margin question sits behind the revenue victory. Alphabet spent $44.9 billion on property and equipment in the quarter, roughly double the year-earlier level, and lifted its 2026 capital-expenditure outlook to $195 billion-$205 billion. Google says it has lowered the cost of serving AI Mode even while adding capabilities. That is the real test: more queries and more precise ads must eventually cover the compute, infrastructure and model costs required to create them.

Why it matters: The old paid-search advantage was a disciplined keyword structure. The next advantage is a disciplined input system: accurate product attributes, live availability, useful landing pages, clear exclusions and trustworthy conversion data. Retailers can reach people who describe a need instead of naming a product. But automation concentrates power. Google can now interpret the shopper, rewrite the product, choose the destination and measure the result. Operators should test incrementality, inspect search terms and landing pages, and compare Google’s conversion story with their own margin data. Gemini is making Google Ads more useful. It is also making Google harder to audit.
