The Maze: Etsy, the marketplace for independent sellers, is testing printed versions of purchased digital designs from eligible US and Canadian shops. It confirmed to Value Added Resource that printing group FYUL powers the service and designers receive no extra payment on those print orders. The second sale stays inside Etsy.

Etsy seller help explaining the separate Ventur Editions print order

Source: Etsy. Etsy’s seller help page describes a separate printing order fulfilled by Ventur Editions.

Video: Mike L Lane. Earlier walkthrough of Etsy’s printing rules and Ventur’s shop, before Etsy confirmed FYUL and no additional designer compensation. Its partner and payment comments reflect that earlier uncertainty.

The Details:

  • One design, two sellers. A customer first buys a downloadable design from its creator. Etsy can then offer a separate purchase of a physical version, such as a poster or mug. Ventur Editions sells that item, prints it and handles shipping and customer service. FYUL, the group behind Printify and Printful, powers Ventur. The designer keeps the original digital sale but receives no additional compensation from the printing order, according to Etsy’s answers to Value Added Resource. This does not require the designer to manufacture or dispatch anything. It also gives them no new printing income.

  • The off switch controls the referral. Eligible shops may join automatically. Sellers already offering physical versions of those designs or using their own printing integration are excluded. Sellers can disable offers in Shop Manager, but only for the whole shop. Previously purchased files from opted-out shops stop appearing as selectable printing options. Buyers can still upload downloaded files independently. Etsy says buyers should respect the designer’s licence; it has not explained whether Ventur checks those permissions. Print orders have separate reviews and support, but protection against a confused buyer reviewing the original shop remains unclear. Concern about that outcome is not evidence it happens routinely.

  • The important upgrade is checkout ownership. Etsy tested printing referrals with Printify and Shutterfly in 2022. Those orders happened on the providers’ websites. Now, the physical order contributes to Etsy’s gross merchandise sales: the value of merchandise transactions, rather than Etsy’s own revenue. For scale, Etsy reported roughly US$2.6 billion in marketplace merchandise sales and US$668 million in revenue for April–June 2026. Those whole-marketplace figures cannot size this experiment. Etsy declined to disclose how many sellers participate, and the reporting supplies neither test sales nor the private partner fee split.

MarketMaze Take: The commercial change is who gets the second checkout. Printing a digital purchase is familiar. Keeping that purchase on Etsy creates another fee-generating transaction without another payment to the designer. That distinction matters more than counting every print as a fresh win for the original seller.

  • Convenience can still be real value. Etsy says customers already print at home, locally or through online services. A simpler route could make digital purchases more attractive without adding fulfillment work for designers. That is the strongest case for the test. It is not a measured increase in digital sales, and no evidence here establishes designer losses either. Zero extra payment and lost income are different claims.

  • Platform access shapes the opportunity. Sellers anywhere can recognise the mechanism: a platform can attach a second seller’s checkout to their customer’s first purchase. Here, the designer can remove the promotion but cannot prevent independent uploads. Other printers have no announced equivalent promotional route; Etsy says it is focused on this version. The lesson travels beyond North America. The test’s availability and unmeasured effects do not.
