The Maze: Etsy's marketplace sales grew 8.8% to $2.6 billion in the third quarter of 2026. Its annual active buyer base also grew for the first time in two years. The recovery reaches beyond the US, but stronger spending does not yet mean shoppers are ordering more often.

The Details:
More buyers, with an important clock attached. Etsy connects shoppers with independent sellers of creative goods, including handmade and vintage items. Its active buyer base reached about 88 million, 1% higher than a year earlier. That figure covers the preceding twelve months, rather than people buying in the third quarter alone. The marketplace added roughly 540,000 active buyers compared with the previous quarter. Its results cover the Etsy marketplace, excluding Depop, the fashion resale business sold in July. That scope matters when comparing the recovery with older company totals that included other businesses.
Spending improved faster than shopping frequency. Merchandise sales measure the value sold through the marketplace, rather than the revenue Etsy keeps. They rose among both US and non-US buyers. Separately, spending per buyer over the preceding twelve months increased 3.9%. Purchase frequency was still modestly lower than a year earlier. Bigger spending and more frequent visits to the checkout are different kinds of recovery. The annual buyer and spending measures also cannot simply be multiplied to explain one quarter's 8.8% sales increase: they cover different periods.
Better discovery is the proposed engine. Etsy says richer buyer profiles and improved recommendations help people find relevant goods. Search increasingly considers quality and the expected experience after purchase. These changes can connect existing demand to sellers who would otherwise be harder to find. Management also increased marketing investment. Its shareholder letter describes several efforts working together; the results do not isolate which caused the improvement. Artificial intelligence helps power personalization, but an earnings rebound is not a controlled test of AI. The observed sales growth is firmer evidence than any single explanation for it.
MarketMaze Take: Etsy has a credible demand recovery, with a qualification that matters to merchants: customers are spending more without yet buying more often. The commercial opportunity is therefore broader than adding shoppers, and more demanding than waiting for an expanding buyer count to lift every shop.
The platform is capturing more value too. Etsy's revenue rose 10.9% to $692.5 million. Revenue equalled 26.2% of marketplace sales, up 0.5 percentage points, partly because of advertising. That aggregate ratio includes services and is not a fee every seller pays. Sellers need their own costs and order results to judge whether marketplace growth improves their business.
The portable lesson is to separate the signals. For marketplace operators and merchants elsewhere, buyer numbers, annual spending, order frequency and platform revenue answer different questions. Etsy's figures show why a healthy headline can coexist with an unfinished repeat-purchase recovery. They do not establish that other marketplaces will follow, or that any individual seller's profit has risen.
