LET’S ENTER THE MAZE!
1️⃣ News

The Maze: eBay Live's GMV run rate grew about eightfold across seven markets worldwide as the marketplace opened live selling to far more eligible sellers.
eBay moved beyond invite-only access, adding self-service onboarding across more than 300 categories plus stronger homepage and app discovery.
Buyers can watch, chat, bid and pay without leaving the stream; sellers manage inventory, orders and event performance through Live consoles.
The format fits collectibles and luxury because expertise and urgency help sell unique goods, but eBay still has not disclosed Live's absolute GMV base.
Why it matters: eBay is trying to own both product discovery and checkout. The next proof point is absolute sales, not another large growth multiple.
2️⃣ News

The Maze: OpenAI is testing multi-product carousel ads below U.S. ChatGPT conversations, turning one sponsored recommendation into a platform-controlled shelf.
Retailers can upload catalogs once, then use feed data to create product ads at scale instead of building each unit manually.
OpenAI currently decides whether a shopper sees one product or a carousel, while the retailer controls the eligible catalog, filters and bid.
The relevance-weighted auction makes feed quality, conversational intent and conversion signals part of the new merchandising contest.
Why it matters: Retailers gain more space at a high-intent moment, but OpenAI gains control over the format, product grouping and paid comparison shelf.
3️⃣ News

The Maze: TikTok Shop now lets eligible merchants use Fulfilled by TikTok inventory to ship orders created on other sales channels—not only TikTok Shop.
A new partner endpoint sends an external order ID, item quantities and customer address into FBT, then returns a TikTok fulfillment order ID.
The U.S. FBT network already stores, picks, packs and ships merchant stock; full country, seller and external-channel availability remains undisclosed.
TikTok is now competing to hold the merchant's primary inventory pool, but no separate public MCF pricing, returns policy or service-level comparison was found.
Why it matters: TikTok is moving from renting discovery to owning more of the operating stack. The prize is fulfillment revenue, merchant data and stickier inventory.
4️⃣ Insight

The Maze: Marketplaces generate 71.4% of Italy’s ecommerce GMV. Social platforms increasingly start the sale, but platform retailers usually finish it.
Italy’s marketplace share is 3.6 points above Spain and 12.6 points above the UK in the five-market comparison.
The split classifies retailers, so Amazon’s first- and third-party GMV both count as marketplace activity under ECDB’s measurement logic.
Brands need marketplaces for reach, but owned stores still protect customer data, loyalty and the economics of the next purchase.
Why it matters: Italy makes the trade-off visible: platforms can win the first order, but brands need a direct reason for shoppers to return without paying rent again.
5️⃣ Insight

The Maze: Central Europe's marketplace share rose from 55% to 60% in two years. Online growth is increasingly flowing through someone else's platform.
The channel split moved steadily: marketplaces reached 55% in 2023, 58% in 2024 and 60% in 2025.
Platforms scale assortment and cross-border reach while stores lost five points of regional revenue share.
Owned stores still keep control of customer data, loyalty mechanics and repeat-purchase economics.
Why it matters: Marketplace reach is now table stakes, but brands still need owned commerce to keep the customer relationship and make loyalty compound.
6️⃣ Insight

The Maze: Western Europe’s 3.4% retail-growth average hides a 2.6-point Spain–Italy gap. One regional plan now means several different commercial bets.
Spain leads at 4.1%, with Germany at 3.9% and the UK at 3.8%, while France reaches 2.5% and Italy 1.5%.
The wider forecast expects ecommerce to outgrow retail, but each country runs on a different mix of maturity, marketplaces, essentials and adoption.
The shared stack can stay regional, but growth targets, inventory, acquisition and channel investment need country-level economics.
Why it matters: Europe is a shared operating region, not a shared demand curve. Retailers that average the markets will misprice growth, inventory and channel investment.
