Amazon Ads reports can answer useful questions, but the denominator changes the story. ACoS divides attributed ad spend by attributed ad sales. TACoS puts that spend against total sales, including sales the platform did not credit to ads. Targeting, placement controls and reports describe different parts of the machine: what can be shown, where bids can rise, and what Amazon attributed afterward. Treat each report as scoped evidence, then check margin, inventory and organic demand before calling a campaign profitable.

⭐ Know these first

Start with Amazon Sponsored Products, Amazon Sponsored Brands, AMC, Advertising cost of sales, Total advertising cost of sales. Then follow the grouped learning order below.

📎 How to read this page

What it means gives the precise meaning. Operator translation gives the version you might hear in a real ecommerce meeting. In real life shows an illustrative example. Watch out and the confusion boxes show where a familiar term can mislead.

📈 Read the relationships first

These combinations are diagnostic hypotheses, not proof of causality. Compare the same period and scope, then investigate the mechanism.

ACoS down, TACoS flat

Usually means: Attributed advertising cost fell relative to ad-attributed sales. Check next: whether total sales and organic demand also moved.

Clicks rise, advertised-product sales do not

Usually means: Traffic increased without a matching attributed sale lift. Check next: search terms, product detail conversion, price and stock.

Advertised-product sales rise, other-product sales fall

Usually means: The ad may be shifting purchases within the catalog. Check next: total account sales and contribution margin.

Placement adjustment increases CPC

Usually means: The placement bid multiplier raised auction exposure or cost. Check next: placement-level orders and margin before keeping it.

🔀 ACoS and TACoS

ACoS uses attributed ad sales; TACoS uses total sales. They answer different questions.

🔀 Ad-attributed sales and incremental sales

Attribution assigns credit under a rule. Incrementality asks whether the sale would have happened without the ad.

🔀 Automatic and manual targeting

Automatic targeting delegates target selection; manual targeting uses targets the advertiser selects. Both still need search-term review.
