The Maze: Amazon finally has usage evidence for the shopping job Alexa was always meant to do. In Q2, worldwide active users of Alexa for Shopping came close to doubling, while interactions grew more than fivefold year over year. The assistant now sits inside Amazon's search bar, app, website and Echo Show, turning a product question into a continuous path through comparison, advertising and purchase. Convenience is rising. So is Amazon's control of the digital shelf.

  • The launch has moved from feature story to adoption story. Amazon disclosed that active users nearly doubled in Q2 and interactions rose more than 5x worldwide. That is the clearest signal yet that shoppers are using conversational discovery rather than merely testing it. Amazon also says U.S. customers who use Alexa for Shopping spend over 40% more per order, while people who have tried Alexa+ join Prime at a nearly 25% higher rate. Those are correlations, not proof that Alexa caused the lift. But they explain why Amazon is pushing the assistant into the centre of shopping.

  • Alexa now connects the full decision loop. Amazon merged Rufus, its product-focused chatbot, with Alexa+, its personal assistant. In the U.S., the result can answer questions in the main search bar, compare products, show up to a year of price history, set alerts, manage a cart, reorder essentials and trigger Auto-Buy when a target price is reached. Agentic AI simply means the software can take an approved action, not just produce an answer. A conversation can begin on Echo, continue on a phone or laptop, then end in checkout without forcing the shopper to rebuild the context.

  • The recommendation is also a retail-media surface. Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands can appear inside Alexa for Shopping conversations, and existing campaigns are automatically eligible. Amazon says almost 20% of shoppers who engage with a Sponsored Brands prompt continue talking about that brand; adding prompts lifts conversion by 6%. The attraction for advertisers is obvious: the shopper states the need, budget and use case directly, while Amazon can measure the path from impression to purchase. The harder question is whether shoppers can tell when the assistant is ranking for relevance and when paid placement helps shape the answer.

  • For sellers, the new shelf is made of data rather than pixels. Traditional keyword results remain available, so this is not the death of search. But conversational discovery changes what earns visibility. Clear product attributes, competitive prices, strong reviews, availability, delivery speed and ad eligibility become inputs to an assistant that may present a much smaller consideration set. Amazon already had a discovery advantage: Gartner research cited by Retail Dive found 54% of consumers used Amazon for product research in 2025, versus 51% for search engines. Alexa turns that starting point into a guided, cross-device session that Amazon can personalize and monetize.

Why it matters: Amazon is collapsing discovery, recommendation, advertising and checkout into one interface. Brands may gain a shorter route to conversion, but they will compete for fewer conversational slots chosen by Amazon's systems. The operator task is no longer only ranking on a results page. It is making product data legible to the assistant, testing how sponsored prompts change selection, and watching whether higher engagement creates incremental demand or simply redirects traffic Amazon already owned.
